Lactarius mitissimus (Fr.) Fr. Milder Milchling. Cap 3–6cm across, convex, later flattened or with a depression, sometimes with a small umbo, bright brownish-orange or apricot, surface velvety-greasy to the touch but not sticky, margin incurved at first. Stem 30–70 x 6–12mm, concolorous with cap. Flesh white, firm, often hollow in stem with age. Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, palish ochre. Milk abundant, white; taste mild. Spore print cream (C) with a slight salmon tinge. Spores covered in warts mainly joined by thinnish ridges to form a somewhat incomplete network, 8–9.5 x 6.5–7.5µ. Cap surface of more or less erect hyphae with rounded ends separated by jelly. Habitat deciduous and coniferous woods. Season autumn. Frequent. Not edible. Distribution, America and Europe. |
